Recovering Unclaimed Property
held by the State Treasurer's Office is free!
Consumer Alert! The Connecticut State Treasurer's Office
is issuing a consumer alert to remind the public that using a consulting service
is not required in order to collect unclaimed property. The State Treasurer's Office says that
anyone may claim their property in two ways — free of charge:
- Visit the Treasury’s official website, http://www.ctbiglist/. Enter your name,
download a claim form and follow the instructions; or
- Call 1-800-833-7318, weekdays between 8:00
a.m. and 5:00 p.m. …
Outside consultants, often called
“finders,” have contacted Connecticut residents and offered to search
for their names. Connecticut law permits
finders to charge as much as 10% of the value of any property found. While owners of unclaimed property or
their heirs may choose to use a finder service, the Treasurer's Office wants to
remind the public that the State charges no fee to claim property that
may already belong to them.
